Big Soda Suit: Losing more people to sweets than to the street

It’s become really clear to me that we’re losing more people to the sweets than to the streets,” says one of two pastors who are suing Coca Cola and the American Beverage Association, saying sugary drinks are killing their communities. Big Soda has been stealth marketing to people of color and it is this population who drink the most soda, according to an article in The Washington Post.

Studies show that Blacks and Hispanics make up about 44 % of soda drinkers in the US. This group also ranks highest in heart disease, diabetes, stroke, obesity and lower extremity amputations.

Why is this? In the lab, as in the human body, sugar is an ‘oxygen scavenger’. The sugar molecule is slow to metabolize and therefore takes a lot of oxygen to break down fully. This leaves less oxygen to support vital processes, such as heart, brain, liver, pancreas and metabolism.

The balance of oxygen supply and demand is key to health and wellness. Think oxygen!
